Survey Responses"Masculinity doesn't mean dominance."
"Unhealthy masculinity is unsafe, and we should have more booths or programs like this so our voice can be heard." "Being masculine doesn't mean your a male." "Many dimensions to positive masculinity." |
Action DevelopmentAs a group we wanted to educate men (and women) on healthy behaviors. Talking about healthy masculinity helped to challenge their views of how they see masculinity in men and women. In order to really challenge and change the mindset of these men we wanted to impact them physically and mentally.
Areas Of ImpactMental - We made a board with words multiple words that were healthy and unhealthy that were all connected to the main word MASCULINITY. Also, we had a video (shown above) that we showed to the public. This video portrays healthy and unhealthy masculinity.
Physical - We built a high striker where whenever a male would attempt to hit the bell, he was unable to. Then when a woman would hit it (in front of the male), it would ring the bell. This made the men annoyed because the woman would be able to hit the bell, but the man couldn't. It was testing the man's strength and ability against a woman's, but it showed that just because a woman was "stronger", didn't mean you were any less of a man. ContributorTogether we worked with the Assistant Director of the Women's Resource Center, Mrs. Carrie Williams. Mrs. Williams supplied us with a booth at the Male Health Symposium where we carried out our action, which was a success.
Results
The surveys and responses during our action allowed us to assess our action as a success. While challenging others about their masculinity, we received the results that we expected and hoped for. While the number of individuals that stopped by were low, we were still able to get our idea across and cause awareness. Help us out more with your thoughts about our portrayal of masculinity and what you think about us! Were you able to get anything out of our website? Will you raise awareness?
